Knock Knock

Who's there?

It’s a door.
Decorative verandah doors are a traditional feature of old Queenslanders, so being an old Queenslander, I figured I should make one.

The one I remember from Auntie Shirl’s house had a lattice inlay and was a double-door, and that configuration was pretty popular.  But I didn’t have enough room for a double door, and the laser lets me make things more interesting than criss-cross lattice.

The door is multi-layers of pine. The decorative inlay is multi-layers of ply.  …and a messy paint job.

Along with the door, I made brass plaques for both sides.  Don’t tell anyone, but they are actually laser-cut and engraved acrylic, painted with a magical paint comtaining real brass that ages and patinas like real brass.   …and they are a secret latch to lock and unlock the door into its frame.  Sneaky and cool.

Norman the dog doesn’t car about the messy paint job, and he doesn’t know how the secret lock works.   So now he is able to survey the neighbourhood from the verandah and we don’t have to worry about him getting down the stairs into the carport or eating a delivery guy.
