JC USD

Some hand-cut dollar bills (about $1.60 worth). 5mm squares distributed on layers of glass in an aluminium frame. Made in 2001.

A kind developer from the UK customised some software for me to aid in the making of this piece.  His mosaic software would take a set of images and rearrange them to form a larger composite image, but it would use each source image multiple times if needed, and only ever the ‘right’ way up.  The software modifications allowed me to specify that each source image could only be used once, but that it could be used in any orientation.  And after having made a composite image, I’d get a recipe sheet of all the components used.
All I then had to do was make a digital library of 5mm squares of currency and feed in my target image of JC.  The software gave me a recognisable image and the recipe, which I could then use to take a blade to some real cash.
